Final Draft

“Ahhh,” I awoke in a cold sweat, I looked around as if I saw something move. I could hear my family downstairs. So I decided to go and see what was going on. I looked outside my window and saw a cop car. I knew they did their daily checkups on the houses, but I felt as if they were looking for me because they were there longer than usual. I remembered the night before and I thought hard I knew I messed up. I went out the night before but I made a large mistake. How could a young fourteen-year-old make a mistake so big to end up in the dog house.

“Come on Phillip don’t be a coward,” My friend Mark called out, “If you don’t want to help us rob that corner store then you shouldn’t have come with us.”

“No I want to be here.”
            “Then act like it.”

I can outrun mark anytime and anywhere, but that’s what I was afraid of. I didn’t want him to end up in jail or worse prison. I always trusted him but in tough decisions he could turn on us all. Mark was a scrawny with black hair, he always looked emo to me. Skylar was our posies’ leader. She always thought of herself as the leader that is, but we always ended up listening to her anyway. She wasn’t only leader because Mark and I were fourteen and she was sixteen but because she knew what she was doing. We never did anything that bad we only did home invasions, pick pocketing and robberies. That was our business and that was our lives.

Skylar was honking the horn noticing us to hurry. Mark was watching the cashier to make sure he wasn’t pressing the silent alarm and I was taking the cash. I got around two hundred dollars. The best part about it was we never got caught.

Then it hit me, the cop car was at my house not only to checkup. He came because we were too stupid to erase the video tape. I was shaken up a little. I went downstairs when the cop left and started to eat breakfast.

“What happened to your friend Mark?” my mother asked.

            “I don’t know, what happened?”

            “He’s dead.”

I was shocked to hear this come from my mother. Out of all the people to tell me this she was the first to know. When the officer was here he didn’t ask many question or even say a lot. It was just a normal check-in like we do every day. The officer did ask one question that spooked me he asked if I was Mark Nolan. I started to walk to school when I saw an ambulance and a person lying on the ground. I didn’t notice who it was but then I saw it. It was what to officer talked about, it was Mark.

Skylar drove off from the corner store and we were all hyped up. We thought of ourselves unstoppable. We all got paid of course like we usually do, but I felt as if something was off. Mark yelled out, “Hey why do I only have twenty-five bucks?” I looked at my cash stack and it was also twenty-five not fifty.

“why do you get one-hundred and fifty and we only get twenty-five!?” Mark yelled out. Skylar was silent as if she wasn’t there. Her head in a trance only a witch could cast. We sat at the green light until it turned red, but we never said a word, not to one another or ourselves.

The cop left our house and I felt a relief. As I walked to my school I saw an ambulance down the road it looked as if someone had been killed. I looked closer and I saw with my own eyes that someone had been killed. I saw who it was, it was Skylar, Skylar had been killed. I was thinking who could’ve killed Skylar. Besides crime she was practically perfect. Next to her body was a knife and her gun she carried on her always.

Mark wasn’t at school today, which was suspicious because he’s never missed a day of school in his life. I was still in shock over the fact of Skylar being dead. After our first period class I ran home I couldn’t handle myself, I wasn’t focused on my classes all day and I was making big mistake on easy problems. I made it back to my house and looked under the fake rock to find my front door key. I went into the restroom and threw up as if I ate a plate of liver. I was trying to think of who could have killed Skylar, but my mind was blank just as my face was. Skylar’s face was motionless as her body. Her heart black, as her motionless hair, her eyes immobile and taken right from her.

Mark and Skylar were arguing when I left the car, but I could hear them talking about their cuts, they were furious toward each other. It sounded as if I was the cause of it by bringing Skylar into it. Mainly it was just me and Mark, but I insisted on having him add someone who could drive. We were a group and now split into three. A lost boy, a lost soul, and a middle man. I had to find out who killed Skylar even if I had to die for it.
I started my search by going to the last place I saw Mark, in front of my house then I followed where he would’ve been, so I went to his house. His mom answered the door.

“Oh hey Phillip, have you seen Mark lately?” she asked politely when she opened the door, “He didn’t come back home last night,” this concerned me deeply. I responded to Mark’s mother telling her I haven’t either. She then told me that if I see him just send him her way. I was starting to think that Mark was also dead and someone was after our group. We were a group I don’t think anyone would call us a group they would usually refer to us as no good cheapskates.

I kept looking for him everywhere I went, but then it started to dawn upon me that I was too late, Mark was dead and without a trace.  It was getting late so I headed home. I walked home with my head down, with a droopy look as if a dog had died in front of me. I made it home and decided to sleep, but when I hit the bed I couldn’t sleep, I was stuck in a trance of wondering what had happened to my friend and what had happened to me. I’ve become what I thought I never would have I became a failure, a failure as a friend and a teammate.

A week had passed and I was still alive I was almost certain that it was just Skylar’s past coming back against her. I thought Mark was lost forever. I thought to much but I could never completely comprehend what had fully happened. Then it touched me, I felt it touch my spine it was a barrel of a glock 17 the type that Mark used. The type that Mark used.

“It took me a long time to find you Phillip,” I couldn’t move I was stuck. I thought, I kept saying to myself, I thought, I never knew it was Mark, “you never knew I could do so much, did you Phillip?” I was still stuck feeling the gun on my back, he started to lift the gun higher to the point of my head. I thought. BANG!!
